Over 20 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Ceredigion today, according to the latest figures.
1,135 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Wales, according to data released by Public Health Wales this lunchtime.
One new death has also been recorded, taking the total number of Covid-related fatalities in Wales since the start of the pandemic to 5,581.
Ceredigion has recorded 21 new cases of the virus today, with Carmarthenshire recording 39 and Pembrokeshire recording 20.
Gwynedd has recorded 24 while Powys has recorded 41.
Health chiefs in Powys announced on Tuesday that Newtown was a Covid hotspot and encouraged residents in the town to get tested for coronavirus even if they aren’t displaying symptoms as the infection rate passed 1,000 cases per 100,000 people in the area, mostly in the under 40s age group.
Ceredigion County Council has also warned that the county is now in the third wave of the virus, warning that cases will rise over the coming days, with particular concern being raised in the north of the county, especially the Borth and Bontgoch area, which also covers Bow Street and Talybont.
On Tuesday, a Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “We are especially concerned about the level of increase in the north of the county in the Borth and Bontgoch area, which has now reached 215.1 per 100,000 population and the Aberystwyth North area is now at 169.8 per 100,000 population, with other areas across the county seeing an increase in cases (seven days from 1 and 7 July).
“The increase is having an impact on cases in the county’s schools with a number of pupils having to self-isolate.”
Ceredigion council leader Cllr ap Gwynn also said two care homes in the county were now classed as “red”, including one in Borth, due to increasing cases.
Wales’ First Minister is due to make an announcement later today on lockdown measures in Wales as England and Scotland both prepare to ease restrictions next week.
