Over 3,000 new cases of coronavirus and 15 deaths have been recorded in Wales today – taking the nation’s death toll to over 6,000 since the start of the pandemic.
Latest figures from Public Health Wales show that 3,130 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded across Wales today.
Of those new cases, 25 have been recorded in Ceredigion, with 183 in Carmarthenshire and 146 in Pembrokeshire
Powys has recorded 137 new cases and Gwynedd has recorded 98.
Four of the 15 deaths recorded in Wales today have been in the Betsi Cadwaladr area of north Wales, taking the region’s total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 1,052.
Hywel Dda and Powys health boards recorded no new deaths today.
The 15 deaths across Wales take the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities to 6,005.
Following the news earlier today that around 43,000 people in England and Wales may have been wrongly told their Covid-19 test was negative because of errors at a private laboratory, Public Health Wales has said that it has not identified any problems.
Testing at the Wolverhampton lab has been suspended following an investigation by NHS Test and Trace.
It is now contacting those affected, mainly in the South West region, to ask them to take another Covid test.
Reacting to the news, Dr Meng Khaw, national director for health protection and screening services for Public Health Wales said: “Public Health Wales is aware of an issue with PCR test results from a UK Lighthouse Lab which processes samples from across the UK, including some from Wales.
“We can confirm that we have not identified issues with our own PCR testing results.
“We recognise that a false negative PCR result will have an impact on people affected. People who have been affected by this issue will receive a text message from the GOV.UK NHS Test & Trace messaging service.
“If you receive a text message advising you to be retested, we strongly recommend that you book a new PCR test. Anyone who has Covid-19 symptoms should book a PCR test as soon as possible, stay at home and self-isolate until they have a test result.”
