A new £7.8m development at Machynlleth’s community hospital has been approved by Powys planners, but the redevelopment is not expected to be completed until 2021.
The refurbishment scheme, approved by planning officers, involves demolition work and building a new extension at Ysbyty Bro Ddyfi in Maengwyn Street.
The planning application was for the erection of a two-storey extension to replace a single-storey wing, two single-storey extensions, erection of gas store building, some demolition works, proposed car park layout alterations and all associated works.
Cllr Mike Williams said: “It is excellent news. People have been waiting for an awfully long time for such positive news.”
Last year, fears were allayed that bats and great crested newts could hold up the redevelopment which is aimed at boosting the services available, including increased community-based services and possible outreach clinics.
But a spokesperson for Powys Health Board said full planning approval had now been granted and a revised application would be submitted.
“This means that we now expect to conclude the scheme by 2021,” the spokesperson said.
