Dyfi Valley health centre staff say they have been abused and threatened in a row over the future of Glantwymyn Surgery.
A consultation is currently ongoing into the future of GP services in the area after Dyfi Valley Health warned that it cannot continue to operate both Machynlleth and Glantwymyn surgeries because of problems with staff recruitment.
But Dr Jon Shaw, of Dyfi Valley Health, said staff members had been targeted by opponents of the group’s request to allow the Glantwymyn surgery to close.
He urged local councillors, who issued a press release about the consultation, to condemn any abuse toward staff members.
He said: “The team at Dyfi Valley Health, most of who live in this community, has been subjected to abuse and threats over the last two weeks.
“We encourage debate and discussion but this aggression has caused immense distress.
“We hope that councillors will speak out against the unacceptable behaviour coming from within their communities.
“The team at Dyfi Valley Health has worked hard to keep the surgery open well past the point other GPs might have managed.
“But that situation is no longer sustainable. The economic and health landscape has changed irrevocably over the last decade."
