A BARMOUTH woman has become the first reconstructive scientist in the UK to graduate from a specialist new course.
Kelly Morris spent the past three years training at Morriston Hospital’s Maxillofacial Laboratory, combining her placement with her studies for the ground breaking Reconstructive Science programme based at Manchester Metropolitan University and Kings College, London.
She applied for the course after completing her degree in Dental Technology in Cardiff and was one of a small cohort of eight students accepted and had the only placement outside England.
During her time at Morriston, Kelly developed several novel and innovative techniques particularly in post-mastectomy reconstruction.
She also created the head phantom she nicknamed Mr Ed as part of her MSc project into studying ways of checking doses of radiotherapy needed for cancer patients.
In November Kelly will begin her new role Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she will design and make facial prosthetics for patients with craniofacial malformations or have suffered traumatic injuries.
