A WAUNFAWR shop was forced to close because of a rodent infestation - and there are fears other parts of the neighbourhood could also be affected.

Magistrates issued a hygiene emergency prohibition order after hearing from Ceredigion County Council environmental health officers that there was evidence of rats at Hendre Stores at Waunfawr, Aberystwyth.

The order was issued on Wednesday, 3 August, and the shop was not allowed to reopen until environmental health officers were satisfied the problem was resolved.

The shop was reopened on Friday after the problem was sorted out.

The council said the order was sought to protect the public after checks found evidence of a rodent problem.

Since this statement was released, the shop has reopened.

A staff member at Hendre Stores said that the owner was currently away, but that work had been carried out to ensure the court order was lifted.

He said that when taking on the shop there had been refuse at the back of the shop which has since been cleared away, and that as part of the work stock had been thrown away.
