THREE Llyn runners have achieved an historic feat by running the first-ever marathon on Bardsey Island.
Huw Williams, Gordon Hughes and Jeremy Collins were granted consent by the Bardsey Island Trust to run the ultra marathon distance of 27 miles on the national nature reserve on Saturday, 17 September.
The runners were raising funds for the Scope charity and successfully completed the nine-and-a-half laps of the island.
Huw, who organised the Brenin Enlli challenge for himself and his two friends, said they were thrilled to have made their mark on the island.
He said: “This was the first time anyone has ever run a marathon on Bardsey, so it was great to make our mark!
“It was a fantastic experience and we are truly grateful to the Bardsey Island Trust and the island’s warden, Caroline Williams, for allowing us to do this.
“Also thanks to Cwrw Llyn who gave us refreshments following the race!”
The challenge was all part of Huw’s fundraising efforts for Scope and part of his training for the Marathon Des Sables next year which takes place in the Sahara Desert, and has been described as the ‘toughest foot race on earth’.
