TEN new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Ceredigion today (Tuesday) as officials expect the number to rise significantly over the coming days.
Officials have warned that a number of people in Cardigan area, where is it is feared hundreds have been exposed to the virus, are awaiting their test results.
In the seven days between 15 and 21 November, Ceredigion recorded 84 new cases of Covid-19, giving the county an infection rate of 115.6 cases per 100,000 population up to Saturday.
Of those 84 cases, 35 were recorded in the Cardigan and Aberporth area, which on last week’s data, had an infection rate of 394.2 cases per 100,000.
This surge led Ceredigion County Council to close all schools in the Cardigan area along with the town’s library.
A number of local businesses in the town have also closed their doors either after staff members were told they were in contact with someone who had Covid-19 or as a precaution.
A mobile testing centre has today been set up in the town at Fairfield car park.
Cases in neighbouring Cilgerran and Crymych are also on the rise with 21 new cases being recorded between 15 and 21 November, giving that area of North Pembrokeshire an infection rate of 247.3 cases per 100,000.
Over the same period, Beulah, Troedyraur and Llandysul area recorded 14 new cases.
Today, Pembrokeshire has recorded nine new cases of coronavirus.
Carmarthenshire is still seeing a high number of daily cases with 32 recorded today.
Powys has today recorded nine new cases.
In the seven days 15-21 November, Powys recorded 120 cases of Covid-19 giving the county an infection rate of 90.6.
Powys County Council has today warned parents to be on their guard as coronavirus is circulating in the county’s schools.
A spokesperson for Powys Council said: “New Coronavirus cases have been reported in county schools which have been linked to pupils and staff staying in school when they have been unwell triggering new cases.”
Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Phyl Davies added: “It is vital that we do all that we can to prevent the spread of the virus.
“I urge families to help and ensure that those who are unwell and show any symptoms even if they appear mild stay at home and follow medical advice. We need to do all that we can to prevent a further rise in coronavirus cases.”
Gwynedd on the other hand, has fared much better, with just three cases being recorded today.
In the seven days 15-21 November, Gwynedd recorded 29 cases giving the county an infection rate of 23.3 cases per 100,000.
21 new deaths attributed to Covid-19 have been recorded in Wales today, taking the total to 2,406 since the pandemic began in March.
Seven new deaths have been recorded in the Hywel Dda region of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire since Friday, taking the total to 107.
Four new deaths have been recorded in the Betsi Cadwaladr area of North Wales since Friday, taking its total to 511.
Powys has also recorded four new deaths with the total now standing at 28.
