A RENOWNED tenor from Tremadog is set to hit the high notes on a popular Welsh soap opera.

One of Wales’s best-known singers will appear in week-day soap Pobol y Cwm for the first time, turning up to give one of the cast stalwarts a big surprise.

Professional singer Rhys Meirion has sung on great stages around the world, in operas and classical concerts, as a member of the Three Welsh Tenors and he’s raised thousands of pounds for charities on sponsored walks through Wales.

But now, on Friday, 1 September on Pobol y Cwm, he will be bringing a smile to Anita’s face (Nia Caron), on her birthday as he sings one of her all-time favourites, Anfonaf Angel (I Send an Angel).

Rhys Meirion, who lives in the Ruthin area, but hails from Tremadog, is the latest celebrity to appear in the soap series, produced for S4C by BBC Cymru Wales.

Famous faces such as Ray Gravell, Jonathan Davies, Max Boyce, Orig Williams, Dic Jones, Shân Cothi, Imogen Thomas, Glyn Wise, Eleri Siôn and David Brailsford are among the others who have appeared in the past. But how did Rhys find his time on set in Roath Lock, Tiger Bay, Cardiff?

“I have to admit, I was very nervous going down to Cardiff, but it was a fabulous experience and I really enjoyed it. I’d never acted on television before so it was a completely new experience for me. I had a warm welcome from the cast; I’m already friends with actors Bryn Fôn, Siw Hughes and Emyr Wyn, but everyone was very helpful,” said Rhys Meirion, 51.See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online now
