Madam,

It was with grave concern that I read your story about Beverlea, who has been made a prisoner in her own home because of losing her only mode of transport, her Motability car.

I ask, what kind of society could treat our most vulnerable people in such a callous and heartless manner?

Comparing such people to the benefit scroungers is a way of demonising genuinely disabled people, who need all the help we can give them. To take away the benefits we have fought hard to achieve over the years is unforgivable. Beverlea spent most of her working life as a nurse caring for such vulnerable people and she deserves better.

What makes this even harder to swallow is the story in the same week of 800 unelected and mostly rich cronies in the House of Lords, who are costing the taxpayer £100m per year, who get paid £300 per day just for turning up and signing in.

An adult worker on the minimum wage would need to work a 42-hour week for the same daily pay, with no taxpayer-subsidised meals and travelling expenses.

Just where do our priorities lie?

Yours etc,

George Buckley, Tywyn.
