Madam,
As a Christian, I was very embarrassed to read Pam McKeever’s claim in her letter that “making a cartoon of the birth of the son of God was a mockery not to be tolerated by Christians”.
I would like Ms McKeever to know that she does not represent me or the millions of other Christians who believe in freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
I find it impossible to find anything more inoffensive or harmless than a Christmas card labelled ‘The Nutivity’, yet somehow Ms McKeever has managed to be offended by it.
Ms McKeever should follow Jesus’s example and remember that Jesus Christ was crucified because of blasphemy with his claim that he was the son of God. With millions of Muslims, atheists, gay people, Jews, Christians and other minorities being imprisoned or even killed because of religious intolerance and claims that certain words or pictures are ‘blasphemous’. What we need now is more religious tolerance not less.
I am very sorry that the head office of Marks & Spencer did not stand up for freedom of religion and freedom of speech, including humour which makes the world a more tolerant, happier and more joyful place. Should comedies loved by millions of Christians and non-Christians like the Vicar of Dibley be banned, or perhaps The Life of Brian and Jesus Christ Superstar, both starring a former mayor of Aberystwyth!
Fortunately I, and many others I’m sure, were far more inspired by the story of Ahmet Acikel who understood the true message of Christmas and Jesus Christ by offering a free meal and company to anyone on Christmas Day at his café in Pier Street, Aberystwyth. God bless him.
Yours etc,
D Jones, Cardigan.
