Madam,

I wonder how many of the people who have been screaming for a £20 million local-businesswrecking bypass at Llanbedr – because having to pause at the bridge occasionally in the summer is wrecking their lives – will applaud the prospect of a nuclear dump at a site just ‘south of Harlech’? (‘Locations for radioactive waste burial considered’).

You should be very careful what you wish for. Is this the real reason for the so-called ‘new approach road to the airfield’ and its development at government expense?

It certainly explains why those nice scientists who held a presentation in our village hall last summer wanted to drill a very deep, and very expensive, exploratory hole on Mochras.

It may also explain why Gwynedd Council is refusing to release the business plan for the airfield in spite of freedom of information legislation.

As tourism is the main earner around here perhaps our community council, which dreamed up the bypass scheme six years ago, should now run a publicity campaign with the slogan, ‘Holiday in sunny Llanbedr and glow all the way home’.

Yours etc, Tony Newbery, Llanbedr.
