Because of our great age, my sister, who lives in England, and I both fall into the third priority tier for coronavirus vaccination. She was jabbed on 13 January last. That is 18 days ago as I write this.
Whenever I have gone out fora walk since 13 January I have always taken my arm out with me in the hope that I might meet a vaccinator with a vial bearing my name but, so far, without any luck. I know vaccination distribution is lumpy but I would rather be considered as impatient than be an in-patient or have an appointment than be disappointed.I suspect that Ursula von der Leyen has her eye on that vial.
Mark Drakeford has clarified his statement that vaccination is not a race. That related to a race between nations. He accepts that it is a race between injection and infection. It is a race to minimise the amount of virus within the population from which more contagious strains may be selected.
We now have a mass vaccination centre on Aberystwyth University Llanbadarn campus. It has been used to vaccinate front line health workers. I understand that it was only opened for priority groups of the general population last Friday, 29 January. There was little evidence of any activity there when I went past on the morning of Sunday31st. There was only a scattering of snow about and the roads were not icy. On 13 January Boris Johnson was talking about vaccinations 24 hours a day, seven days a week as soon as supplies allow.
On 24 January England had vaccinated 80 per cent of their over 80-year-olds. By 27 January the Welsh figure was only 62 per cent. Scotland was lower than that but they have been hit with bad weather.
As a retired veterinary surgeon, I would be happy to volunteer to vaccinate others if I were already protected. I think I could put the needle into the thickest of thick skinned politicians.
