A PROUD mum has smashed her fund-raising target for running the Cardiff Half Marathon in aid of research into a condition that afflicts her “hero” son.
Jackie Sinnett-Jones, 57, will take on the challenge next month in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Her 28-year-old son Iestyn, who has lived independently in Aberystwyth since he was 18, suffers from the condition, which causes scoliosis, respiratory problems and progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles.
Initially hoping to raise £300, Jackie had already raised £412 by Monday.
Jackie, who works for Ceredigion County Council, said that Iestyn has a very rare form of muscular dystrophy – SEPN1 Rigid Spine Syndrome – which affects just one person in 1.3 million.
She said that raising money was a cause “close to her heart”.
“I would like to raise as much as possible, but am looking to raise at least £300,” said Jackie, who lives in Llangeitho.
“I run with a friend and we generally train several times a week, mainly along local routes, building up to the 13 miles of the half-marathon, which is now in our grasp with only a few weeks to go.”
Iestyn was diagnosed with the condition in his early teens after suffering respiratory failure at 11 years old.
“He was put on life support and transferred to Cardiff,” Jackie said.
“It was at this point that his breathing problems became apparent and severe."
The Cardiff Half Marathon will be held on Saturday, 1 October.
