CALLS are being made for jet skiers who harass dolphins to be held accountable for their actions following a recent incident in Abersoch.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Gwynedd Council and Dwyfor Meirionnydd’s MP Liz Saville Roberts received reports that jet skiers were harassing dolphins off Abersoch. This comes less than a month after a member of the public reported a jet skier trying to ram a pod of dolphins off the coast of Tywyn.

Mrs Saville Roberts said these types of incidents need to be stopped and more needs to be done to let the public know how to report criminal harassment of protected wildlife when there are no duty wardens available.

She said: “The deliberate harassment and provocation of marine wildlife is reprehensible, but is something that sadly happens all too often.

“Those who wilfully go out of their way to frighten dolphins by using jet skis to block their path and pen them in should be held accountable for their actions."

Barry Davies, Gwynedd Council Maritime and Country Parks Officer said: “Any allegation that a powerboat or ‘jet-ski’ user has deliberately disturbed any protected species such as dolphins is a serious cause for concern."
