Madam,

I would like to endorse the comments made by Cllr Dan Wyre, on the front page of the Meirionnydd edition of last week’s Cambrian News (‘Death junction fears over new Dyfi Bridge).

In a response to the exhibition on the bridge plans held in Y Plas last October, I told the organisers that the proposed junction of the A487/A493 north of the new bridge looks uncannily similar to the A494/Bala Road junction in Dolgellau which is widely recognised to be lethal. In the proposed layout, vehicles turning from Aberdyfi towards Machynlleth would be pulling across the fast stream of traffic heading north (where drivers are probably looking right along the river valley rather than left towards the junction), and will also be pulling in ahead of drivers moving much faster from beyond the bend to the north (who will be facing into the setting sun during afternoons/evenings).

Ironically, during flood events, drivers on the elevated section are likely to be even more distracted by the sight of the flood-plain below them.

Yours etc

Tim Jenkins
