Editor,

Two days ago, I had an appointment to check an ear problem. Before leaving, I asked if my blood pressure could be checked. “Why do you want that done?” they asked.

Rather startled, I could not give a reason. Being ancient, nearly 97, I forgot why it might have been good to check possible changes.

I was given a lecture on money wasted, how much could go towards cancer research and support, if non-essential procedures were less often performed: “You can go to the chemist if you want to check your blood pressure. You could purchase the necessary kit to do it yourself.”

It is the first time that I have been treated in such a manner. Empathy, respect were utterly lacking.

I followed his “suggestion”. Indeed, our local pharmacist will be willing to oblige.

I have lived in Machynlleth 40 years.

I wonder if other patients have been encouraged to help save money as I have?
