I agree with Jean Miles, people are fed up (Letters, 15 October), but I would suggest their mood is more the result of a lack of government transparency and competence, not the merit of the battle.

Mrs Miles partly excuses the government because they have not dealt with a pandemic before, but sadly, for all those thousands who have died, that is not true. In 2016 there was a Pandemic Preparedness Exercise called Cygnus, which revealed multiple shortcomings in our ability to counter a pathogen like Covid 19.

The Tories say ‘the NHS is safe in our hands’, and proclaim the billions they will spend on it, and then promptly spend those billions, and more, on a privatised Test and Trace system that ignores the expertise and national infrastructure of the NHS, which is akin to deliberate, constructive dismissal of our health system.
