Madam,
I’d like to endorse Patrick O’Brien’s comments (Cambrian News, 26 November) about the felling of trees by the pathway behind Queens Road, Aberystwyth. This area is a delight to walk through, especially in summer, because it gives the feel of countryside within the town, something all too rare. The notice set out for the public’s information is not at all clear, and seems to say that a holm oak and a recently planted cherry to the right of the path are to be felled. Why on earth? The holm oak gives landscape value by making an archway over the path and the cherry is too young to be a nuisance of any kind. The trees do not back directly onto gardens, there is an access lane between, and most of the “gardens” are not worthy of the word anyway, being merely parking lots. If sucker-ing is a genuine problem, pollarding should be considered before felling.Large trees are not our enemies, they are our life support and deserve our respect and consideration. And why waste so much public money just to spoil the view?
Yours etc
