Madam,

I note with interest the letter by Cllr Gareth Davies stating, when referring to the closure of Cwmpadarn School, that both he and Cllr Paul James voted against its closure.

No doubt they both put forward similar arguments in favour of retaining the school as have been put forward by countless other campaigners who have fought the upper tier of the Learning Services at Cyngor Sir Ceredigion for numerous years in an attempt to stop similar school closures.

This is particularly poignant as in the same edition there was an article stating how the shadow education secretary Darren Millar AM confirmed that school closures have “damaged the economy of rural areas” and “ripped the heart from local communities”.

What a pity that these councillors did not recognise the importance of defending schools earlier as they have previously voted in favour of other school closures.

Let’s hope that if they are re-elected as councillors they show the same fight, commitment and enthusiasm to oppose any future school closures as they did in their own backyard.

Yours etc

Byron Jenkins, Llanafan.
