A VOLUNTEER member of Pwllheli’s RNLI lifeboat crew has undertaken a new challenge to raise awareness of dangers posed by the seas around the coast.

After attending the new community safety officer’s course at the RNLI college in Poole, Charlie Falck’s new role is to educate people on the Llyn Peninsula of the risks and dangers around our shores.

The aim is to reduce the number of incidents that occur around the shores through prevention. She will also focus on simple self-preservation skills that can be adopted until help arrives.

As part of their nationwide prevention campaign, the RNLI is developing a Community Lifesaving Plan relevant to each community which has a lifeboat station.

The plan will focus on high-risk water-based activities within the area based upon data from the local station, where actions and interventions can be implemented to reduce the risks.

Over 160 people drown each year around the UK coast and the RNLI, as part of its business plan, has set a target to halve coastal fatalities by 2024.

Charlie’s role as CSO will be to spearhead the campaign locally.
