INSTEAD of their regular monthly meeting on 10 June, Llanfair WI held a celebratory Queen’s Birthday Tea Party, with a red, white and blue theme.
The committee arrived early to lay the tables using the new wipe-clean lace cloths and festive napkins.Apart from the sandwiches, nibbles and biscuits provided by the committee, Jan had made an eye-catching straw-berries and cream gateau decorated with fresh flowers.
First, the necessary WI business was conducted quickly, including correspondence and a reminder about this year’s Rose Bowl meeting on 4 July. Jill Houliston had sent a notice about the Federation’s new Facebook page, to which institutes will be able to add photos in due course, although we also publish them on our Llanfair Facebook page. We have received a request from the Premature Babies Unit for knitting patterns for baby clothes or used items in good condition, as small sizes are now difficult to obtain in the shops.
Finally, Sue described her visit to Holyhead for the launching ceremony of a new lifeboat, due to a legacy received from Mary and Archie Hooper. Mary was a former WI member.
The ceremony was attended by personnel and sea cadets, all in uniform. The boat was called out straight away to assist a yacht in trouble. The party began with a photographic quiz of the current Royal Family tree and line of accession, which resulted in a tie between table one and table five. After a tie breaker, table one with Jan, Sue and Frankie were declared the winners. The second quiz contained general questions progressing through the Queen’s life.
It was won by Betty’s group on table four after three tie-breakers.
After such brain exertion, everyone tucked into the delicious tea and thoroughly enjoyed it.Jan won the collage competition, with Christine in second place and Sue third.
The raffle was won by Pat.Sandra is trying to arrange a speaker for next month’s meet-ing on 8 July, to replace the recent cancellation.
