THE president welcomed members to our monthly meeting on a warm and sunny afternoon. Our speaker for the afternoon was Paul Morgan who gave a talk about his beautiful house Aber Artro Hall.
Mr Morgan told us about the house, originally built in 1888, and how it was remodelled in 1913 and how the recreation of it was influenced by the arts and crafts movement. He described its use as a hospital in the First World War and the dedication of Mrs Owens and her daughters in their care of the wounded soldiers. Slides were shown of the garden as it is today. We were also told of the interesting people who had lived there, including the First World War poet Patrick Shaw-Steward; the Gamewell and the Cooke family.
He spoke of how the house had changed over time and his renovation of the hall using local skilled personnel and materials.
Members agreed it had been lovely talk and we all learnt so much about this interesting house here on our door-step. Carol Chamberlain thanked him warmly on our behalf.Jan spicer gave reports on the spring council and the Welsh AGM. She encouraged members to attend this event as they were extremely enjoyable. She received certificates on behalf of Llanfair WI and Barbara Roberts who won the Peggy Moses Cup.
A description was given about our new Facebook page and resolutions were voted upon.Sue Travis informed members that she was to attend the naming ceremony of a new D791 lifeboat to be called the Mary and Archie Hooper. This was brought with a legacy left to the RNLI by Mary and Archie on their passing. Mary was a valued member of Llanfair WI for many years. Our next meeting will be held on 11 June and our speaker will be David Griffiths from the Snowdon Mountain Rescue.
To celebrate the Queen’s birthday there will be cake and members are requested to wear red, white and blue.
