A gun salute and a cannon provided a fitting send-off for a man who dedicated his whole life to Barmouth.

Harry Allday’s funeral took place on Friday, 7 February, with a procession through the town before and after a service at St John’s.

The 84-year-old, who had served as a town councillor and volunteered for the RNLI, died on Tuesday, 21 January.

The RNLI gave Harry a gun salute and led his coffin around the streets of Barmouth, processing by the Sailor’s Institute, a building he put much of his own time and money into restoring.

Ann-Denise, Harry’s widow, said: “The service was lovely. There was beautiful music and a great eulogy from the coxswain, Peter Davis. I read out Harry’s favourite poem. I felt that was a good tribute to him.

“By the RNLI boathouse, cannons were set off. Everyone was stood outside and clapped as the hearse came by.

“I really felt everyone came together. All the groups which he was a part of came to say thanks.

She added: “I’d like to thank Pam Odam who did a great job of organising the day and Chris Mills who was on the harp. Also Helen from Min-y-Môr who allowed us to host Harry’s wake even though they were closed for refurbishments.”
