Ladies Golf
FOLLOWING another very successful year, the golf club’s women members gathered over the holidays for their Christmas dinner and presentation evening at the club. The year began with the Frederick Cup, when lady captain Ruth Thapa put up a team against that of Alice Hughes, the vice-captain. On this occasion it was Ruth who was the victor.Over the season, Rhian Wynn seemed to be on fire winning the Col Wilder Rose Bowl, the Gaynor Edwards Trophy, Rene Davies Shield, the Challenge Cup for 36 holes, the R. Lloyd Jones Cup and the Relda Owen Salver with partner Helen Lewis. No wonder then that after so fruitful a year Rhian won the WRM Harris trophy as the most successful golfer of the year.Ruth Thapa won the Beryl Jones Trophy and the Alwyn & Gaynor Williams Cup. Apart from her success partnering Rhian, Helen Lewis’ successes were HM Jones Cup (net) and the Welsh Dragon Broach. Sue Fisher won the Bradley Davies Trophy and, (with Helen Lewis), the Tapley Cup. Other competitions included the GUW monthly medals and a Christmas competition.January sees the ladies playing eclectic games and looking forward to the new season in March with Alice Hughes as captain.
Music Club
THE GOLDEN Jubilee season of the music club began with concerts by the Piatti String Quartet and the Galliard Wind Ensemble that met the highest expectations befitting internationally acclaimed performers. Who better to follow them than the celebrated pianist Tom Poster who plays in the Tabernacle on Friday, 22 January at 7.30pm. Tom requires no introduction to local audiences. He even practiced in Y Tabernacl before winning the piano section of the Young Musician of the Year. Clearly destined from an early age to achieve great things, he is now internationally recognised as a pianist of outstanding artistry and versatility, equally in demand as soloist and chamber musician across an unusually extensive repertoire. Little surprise then that Tom made his London concerto debut at the age of 13 and subsequently gained a double first in music at Cambridge. Tom will play an attractive selection of music by Mozart, Kurtag, Schubert, Chopin, Mendelssohn and Ravel. Admission £10 at the door.
