THE TOWN’S two county teams made a tremendous start in the Welsh Pool Association’s north Wales Inter League 2016 on Sunday, 10 January.Machynlleth A, who just missed out on promotion to the topflight premier division in 2015, secured a brilliant 22-18 result at home to Caernarfon in Division One, showing that they will again be a force to be reckoned with.While in this season’s division three campaign, Machynlleth B will also have thoughts of pro-motion after an impressive and morale-boosting victory at Conwy B by 23 frames to 17.The Machynlleth and District Pool League’s mid-season fixtures were played on January 14 and left second-placed Skinners A, trailing Divi-sion One leaders Llew Coch A, who trounced home team Dwynant 12-3, by six points after they lost 8-7 at Rugby Club A.There was a big result for Bowling Club as they secured an 11-4 victory at home to Llew Coch B.There were also wins for Tredegar Arms, 8-7 at White Lion A, and for White Horse A, 9-6 at home to Rugby Club B.Table: Llew Coch A (27 pts.), Skinners A (21), White Lion A (18), Tredegar Arms (18), Rugby Club A (15), White Horse A (9), Dwynant (9), Bowling Club (9), Rugby Club B (6), Llew Coch B (3).Meanwhile Division Two leaders Foresters dominated their match with Llew Coch Dinas, winning 12-3.Also recording comfortable victories on their travels, Wynnstay Llanbrynmair won 11-4 at Llew Coch Ladies and Rugby Club C saw off Skinners B by 10 frames to five.Table: Foresters (21 pts.), Wynnstay Llanbrynmair (18), Rugby Club C (15), Slaters (15), Skinners B (15), Y Llew Coch Dinas (12), Llew Coch Ladies (3), Penrhos (3), White Lion Ladies (0).

IN THE period 30 December to 20 January, under Powys County Council’s scheme of delegation, county planners had approved the following applications: Section 73 application to vary condition no. 2 of planning permission P/2015/0628. Works to be carried out in accordance to drawing 15119-3, Dorthonion, Forge; cladding and painting to the single storey rear extension, 7 Windsor Terrace, Machynlleth.However, an application for a certificate of lawfulness for a proposed use namely erection of a carport attached to existing building on land at Bwthyn Gwyn, Llan-wrin, had been refused.

FORESTERS B consolidated their position as pacesetters in the Dyfi Valley Dominoes League following week 10 of 18. Civic Society
ON THURSDAY, 21 January, the Machynlleth and District Civic Society held its first executive committee meeting of the New Year at the Tabernacle, Heol Penrallt, with Margaret Vince in the chair.Margaret welcomed the eight members and recorded apologies from six members.Richard A B Jones (secretary) reported on correspondence from Civic Trust Cymru, which referred to affiliation and the autumn edition of their news bulletin. Members agreed to affiliate and praised the news bulletin.Treasurer John Wynne Jones presented the bimonthly accounts, which members approved with thanks.He then went on to detail a letter from the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales (NSSAW), which sought permission to use film material in which the society holds rights.Following John’s advice as to the excellence of the BFI Player site, members agreed to the request from NSSAW.Under members’ items, Carol Handcock raised the issue of the town clock having stopped for a little while. The secretary, who is also clerk to the town council, assured members that work was in hand to provide some new mechanism for the clock, which should be completed in 3/4 weeks.The next meeting was arranged for 7pm on Thursday, March 24, at the Tabernacle. All members of the society are welcome to attend.
Football
MACHYNLLETH FC’s leading striker Richie Evans is still riding high among the Spar Mid Wales League Division One’s goal scorers, with 15 league and three cup goals, despite a number of postponed games due to unfit pitches. Andrew Page, with nine goals, is also in the division’s top ten.These two goal-hungry forwards have scored 21 of Machynlleth’s 28 league goals this season and together with the side’s excellent teamwork have seen the team rise to mid-table, 11 points adrift of leaders’ Penrhyncoch.
