Concert

TWO years ago, the students of the Wells Cathedral Music School took the Tabernacle by storm when presented by the Machynlleth Music Club. Wells is an internationally-renowned music school and provides world-class music training. Drawn from countries world-wide, they are always prominent in the final stages of the Young Musician of the Year competition as in the ranks of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.On Friday, 18 March, at 7.30pm, their talents will again be on display at Y Tabernacl when the Machynlleth Music Club presents an octet of string and wind players. After displaying their solo skills they will together perform the much-loved giant of the chamber repertoire, Schubert’s Octet in F major.Once again Wales will be represented in this international line-up, this time by Edgar Francis of Arthog, a violinist and member of the National Youth Orchestra who has been studying at Wells for the past five years. His solo contribution will be Romance by Dvorak.

Dominoes

FORESTERS B placed one hand on the Dyfi Valley Dominoes League title with a maximum 11-point victory in round 16. Dyfi U3A

DYFI U3A – University of the Third Age – will be holding their next meeting at the Machynlleth Bowling Club on Friday, March 18 between 2pm and 4pm.The highlight of the afternoon will be Margaret Jeffreys relating Mr Smith and the Poco Hunters - A Romantic Tail.

Alzheimer’s

NORTH Powys Alzheimer’s Society will be holding drop-in sessions in Machynlleth in March and April.Pat Griffiths, Dementia Support Worker for Alzheimer’s Society in North Powys, will be holding the drop-in information sessions at Machynlleth library on Wednesday 16 March and Wednesday, 20 April between 11.15am and 12.30pm. Pat said: “If you are worried about your memory, living with a diagnosis of dementia or caring for someone who has dementia and you would like further information or support, please call in at the library on those dates for a chat.”

Café celebration

A VEGETARIAN café in Machynlleth has celebrated nearly 40 years of business with a St David’s Day extravaganza. The Quarry Cafe was recently bought by staff member Lynda Wenman.To celebrate St David’s Day, the café opened up a new event space.Regulars and locals were there on the day. “Our longest serving customer, a lovely lady called Jane who’s been coming here since 1979, cut a ribbon to kick off the festivities,” said Lynda.
