DAVID Rynn was re-elected as chairman at the group’s recent AGM.Hugh Ramsbotham then regaled the membership with an off-the-cuff talk about a man called John Bradburne, the son of a parson from Cumbria. Quite a life story told by a very good story teller. Guest speaker for May will be Peter Jones on ‘A Year in the Life of a Borough Mayor’, while June sees Probus welcoming Tia Jones who will speak on writing. Tuesday, 26 July, is Ladies Day when the speaker will be Naomi Jones on Snowdonia National Park.

Open garden

IN AID of the group’s Denman bursary, Eglwysfach WI is pleased to extend a warm welcome to its open garden day on Sunday, 15 May, from 11am to 5pm.Tickets cost £5 (children free) and include lunch or tea in the Iron Room, Eglwysfach, and a garden quiz.Call 01654 781322 for tickets or obtain from the Iron Room on the day.

Psychic and holistic fayre

THERE will be a psychic and holistic fayre at Plas Machynlleth on Sat-urday, 14 May, from 10.30am to 4pm. Admission free.

Readings

ON Saturday, 14 May, continuing the Tabernacle Museum of Modern Art Machynlleth’s series of events to celebrate Romanticism in the Welsh Landscape, there will be an afternoon of readings from the works of those who’ve travelled through the Welsh landscape since the 18th century.The readings, with Dr Mary-Ann Constantine and Dr Elizabeth Edwards of the Curious Travellers project at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, run from 2pm to 4.30pm.Admission is £3 and includes refreshments.

Biosphere

THE UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere an-nual meeting will showcase recent activities as well as exploring how the status can help them work more effectively.The event will also ask people to suggest how their own activities relate to the biosphere’s objectives.The meeting is an open event, at 7.30pm on Monday, 16 May, at Y Plas.For more information, call 01654 703965 or visit www.dyfibiosphere.org.uk

THE recent Machynlleth and District Pool League finals at Plas Machynlleth produced some hard-fought frames in the singles and doubles.Scotty Davies (Llew Coch A) lifted the first division singles title with victory over Geraint Evans (Skinners A) and, joining forces with Lee Davies, collected the division’s doubles’ title thanks to victory over Llew Coch team-mates Carl Clark and Robert Griffiths.In a change of fortune, Geraint Evans took the winners’ silverware in the open singles, beating Robert Lewis of Foresters.Meanwhile in the second division finals, the singles title was secured by Kyli Williams of Rugby Club C with victory over Llew Coch Ladies’ Mel Corfield. While the doubles final was won by Wynnstay Llanbrynmair’s Alwyn Jones and Edward Jones, defeating Foresters’ Lee Roberts and Robert Lewis.The season’s leading first division players’ accolades went to Scotty Davies (Llew Coch A) with an impressive over 87 per cent record of 47 wins from 54 frames. Mark Gaskell (White Lion A) claimed runners-up spot with 41 wins from 51 frames.The second division’s top player, Edward Jones (Wynnstay Llanbrynmair), lost just six of his 39 frames, ahead of second-placed Robert Lewis (Foresters) with 32 wins from 42 frames.On the county scene, April’s fourth round matches in the North Wales Pool Association Inter League brought a disappointing 25-15 de-feat for Machynlleth A at Division One rivals Rhyl A.Meanwhile, however, Machynlleth B moved up to third place in Division Three with a well-earned 22 frames to 18 home victory over visitors Wrexham Gwersyllt.
