Somme Commemoration
FOUGHT between July and November 1916 near the Somme River in France, the Battle of the Somme was one of the bloodiest battles in military history.In Machynlleth there will be a service at St Peters Church on 26 June, to commemorate the Battle.The service will be led by the Rev Canon Kath Rogers.
U3A
AN extremely interesting talk on The Drovers of Wales was given by Dilys Williams at the U3A meeting on Friday, 17 June at the Machynl-leth Bowling Club. The next meeting will be Friday, 15 July when the talk will be ‘12,000-mile bike journey through North America’ by Tony Morgan. Those interested are welcome.
Pool
LLEW Coch kept their lead at the top of the Machynlleth and District Summer Pool League with a 10-5 home victory over Skinners B in week 3.Skinners A claimed the biggest score of the round, beating visitors Bowling Club 12-3.Dwynant’s 11-4 win at home to Slaters saw them join Skinners A and Rugby Club on six points.While, although securing their best result of the season, Llew Coch Ladies travelled to Llanbrynmair and narrowly lost by eight frames to seven.Table (week 3): Llew Coch (9 pts), Skinners A (6pts), Dwynant (6pts), Rugby Club (6pts), Skinners B (3pts), Llanbrynmair (3pts), Slaters (3pts), Llew Coch Ladies (0pts), Bowling Club (0pts).Meanwhile, on the county front, Machynlleth A found the winning formula at Caernarfon in the North Wales Pool Association Inter League Division One, squeezing a 21-19 result after a thrilling finish on 12 July.
Council Meeting
MACHYNLLETH Town Council will be holding its next ordinary monthly meeting at Plas Machynlleth on Monday, 27 June, at 6.30pm.Official notice of the meeting, including agenda items, will be fixed to the council’s notice board in the Plas foyer. The public and press are welcome to attend.
Golf Club
TWO players from the Ladies’ Section played in the second round of the Challenge Bowls held at Aberdyfi on 2 June: Rhian Wynn in the Silver Division and Sue Fishbourne in the Bronze. Both qualified to play in the All Wales Final at Llandrindod in August. Congratulations to both and the best of luck in the final.On 9 June the lady members played the Colonel Wilder trophy.Margaret Austin won with 33 points; Sue Fishbourne was second and Rhian Wynn third.

BY decision notice of 7 June, county planners approved an application for the erection of a single storey extension, the Barn, Barlings Barn, Llanbrynmair.
Bowls
MACHYNLLETH ladies’ 100 per cent record came to an end in the Montgomeryshire CBA Ladies’ Wednesday League, slipping to fifth place in the 13-team league, as league leaders Carno ladies romped to a stunning 32-4 victory.The town’s men’s teams were left without games last week as torrential rain made greens unplayable.
Meadows’ Day
