Machynlleth’s mayor is calling for speedier progress on the town’s two major developments, at the hospital and with a new transport interchange.

A multi-million-pound redevelopment of the hospital has won Welsh Government backing, but delays have meant it is still going through the planning process.

And funding of around £350,000 has been announced for work for a transport interchange, for which Powys County Council officers are drawing up plans.

Both schemes have previously been welcomed by Machynlleth Town Council and residents in the town, but mayor Monica Atkins said she was keen to see real progress being made on both schemes to allow work to start shortly.

Speaking about the £7.8m hospital redevelopment, which will see the hospital become an integrated hub for healthcare, community healthcare and outpatient services, Cllr Atkins said: “I want it to start so we can see it move on as I think it’s important for Machynlleth. I want to see the project start.”

Cllr Atkins was backed by county councillor Michael Williams who said that while he was still confident the scheme would be a huge boost to health services in the Dyfi Valley, many people would not believe it was going ahead until they saw work start.
