An amber weather warning has been issued for Ceredigion and Powys this evening, with up to 70mm of rain possible.
The Met Office this morning issued an amber warning from 6pm tonight until 10am on Tuesday for heavy rain from Aberystwyth to Newtown.
The rain is expected to cause flooding and travel disruption whilst fast flowing water could cause a danger to life.
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Rain will become persistent and heavy later on Monday, lasting until later on Tuesday morning.
"Between 50 and 70mm of rain is likely to fall widely, with around 100mm possible over higher ground.
"This is likely to lead to flooding and travel disruption."
