The memorial to the heroes of Trefeurig who served during the First and Second World Wars has finally found a new home after seven years in storage.

The new Trefeurig Community Memorial was unveiled on Saturday, in the playing fields at Pen-bont Rhydybeddau.

The memorial was originally on display in Trefeurig School which closed in 2007. The community took over the building from the council, with regular events being held there – keeping the memorial on permanent display.

However, in 2012, the community could not afford to fund the building any longer and the old school’s building was sold by the council.

The memorial was put into storage where it has remained for the past seven years while the community hatched a plan to finance a new memorial.

The Trefeurig Cae Chwarae Committee raised the money to finally have the memorial restored.

The Trefeurig communities include Salem, Llwyn Prysg, Penrhiw Newydd, Pen-bont Rhydybeddau, Cwmsymlog, Cwmerfyn, Cefn-llwyd, Banc-y-darren, and Capel Madog – with all featuring men who served during the two world wars.

Committee members, councillors, residents and relatives of those honoured on the memorial were on hand to watch the unveiling of the new memorial.
