A “new-style Rotary Club” spent its first day of volunteering marshalling at the Race for Life.

Ardal Aberystwyth is a new-style Rotary Club that gives its members the opportunity to help communities locally and throughout Wales, and to enjoy fellowship and fun with like-minded people.

The “innovative, family-orientated club” has grown in a short number of weeks to nearly 30 members.

On their first day of volunteering, more than 20 members were “out in force” marshalling at the Race for Life on Sunday, 19 September.

Newly elected president Kerry Ferguson, who took part in the Race for Life, said: “I am so excited to be a part of Ardal Aberystwyth, and truly honoured to have been voted in as the first ’llywydd’ too.

“Community is a big part of what I do, and Ardal Aberystwyth will be a great platform for us to do more of that in the town and surrounding areas – supporting current activities, adding more, and also enabling a huge range of people from all businesses, sectors and backgrounds to work together to see positive changes.

“It’s fantastic that our first event was able to be the Race for Life too – this event is such an important one in the Aberystwyth calendar and to be able to marshall and ensure the smooth ‘running’ is a brilliant starting point for us.”

Kerry added: “Rotary International have a new ‘model’ which clubs can follow - it seemed like a perfect opportunity to set up a new club, following a very new format and basically paving our own way under the Rotary International banner. We’re keen to promote equality and diversity in the group, and the importance of the Welsh language.”

The club will be giving more support to many future local events.
