SIGNS for the newly expanded Lidl supermarket in Aberystwyth have been given the go ahead despite town council objections over the use of Welsh.

Lidl applied for a new totem pole and display units at the Rheidol retail park, where it is set to open an extended store in the spring.

Aberystwyth Town Council said it objects to internally illuminated signage and that it “should be fully bilingual (other than the brand name ‘Lidl’) with Welsh given priority.”

A planning officer’s report said: “In respect of the objections raised by Aberystwyth Town Council with regard to the use of the Welsh Language, the totem pole will display the name of the retail park, along with the opening times, in both Welsh and English.

“The poster unit will display product posters and the gable advertisement will only show the brand name Lidl.”

The new-look Lidl store, which will be 1,300 square metres, is due to open in the Spring.
