MACHYNLLETH Town Council should enter into talks with Powys County Council to secure the future of the town’s Crossroads day centre, councillors have agreed.
The day centre in Machynlleth is run on the county council’s behalf by charity Crossroads, but could be hit because the council is looking to make savings.
While a council Cabinet meeting agreed on Tuesday, 20 December, to ensure the future of day centres for another year, Cllr Michael Williams said he was concerned that the future of the service in Machynlleth could be under threat in future years and insisted the town council should be considering stepping in to secure its future.
He said: “It’s absolutely vital the service remains. Without it people will feel isolated and alone. I shall be voting for whatever it takes to keep the day centres open, in Machynlleth and everywhere else in Powys. Elderly people and disabled people deserve fair play.
“That’s what it is, fair play. People out there have had enough of this austerity approach, no matter where it is coming from.”
Cllr Williams added: “They’re our people. They’ve spent their lives fighting for services and paying their taxes and now it’s time for us to support them.”
