LAMPETER Carnival – one of the biggest events in the town’s calendar for many years – may be under threat.

Organisers have disclosed that there are very real fears that the carnival – which is traditionally held on the first weekend of August – may not be held this summer,

That is the gloomy prediction of the three-woman committee who have been struggling to keep the carnival afloat in recent years.

Chairperson Anwen Jones, treasurer Donna Jones and secretary Nikki Davies called a meeting at Castle Green restaurant on Monday in a desperate bid to recruit new members.

“As we are only a committee of three - who also have other commitments - it’s impossible for us to do all the organising and jobs on the day ourselves,” they said in a Facebook post.

“We do all the work including the setting-up of marquees, the quiz night, walking treasure hunt, car treasure hunt and shop windows competition along with the main event itself,” Nikki told the Cambrian News.

“We also have to organise the judges as well as the PA system.

“That’s a big commitment for such a small committee and, although we hold meetings, we don’t seem to get any new faces coming forward offering to volunteer. People say they’ll help out the following year, but that just doesn’t seem to happen."
