A Llanfair Clydogau pensioner has launched a fundraiser for a new mobility scooter after her “world became smaller” once her’s broke down.
Judith McKay, 71, was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2003. Her Tramper scooter, which recently broke down, had become a “vital part of her life”.
The Tramper Scooter needed by Judith costs around £7,500, so Judith launched a fundraising appeal with an initial target of £5,500.
Despite only launching a GoFundMe last week, Judith has already managed to raised over £1,000 online.
Thanks to private donations from friends, a £1,000 donation from The Headley Trust, and donations from a local Ceredigion MS group, Judith has managed to raise a further £2,455.
“It’s overwhelming how many people have been giving me money in just a few days. I just want to thank everybody who has donated, it’s just brilliant,” Judith said.
Judith has raised money for the MS Society previously by completing challenges, such as parts of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, on her Tramper.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord. In MS, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged. This causes a range of symptoms like blurred vision and problems with how we move think and feel.
Judith added: “It just makes everything much slower, that’s the main thing. Things require so much more thought, you can’t just jump up and do something - you have to plan it all out.”
Judith and her partner, who is 83 and also has many health issues, own a smallholding in Llanfair Clydogau, near Lampeter, and so her off-road Tramper mobility scooter has played an “important” part of her life.
“Its uses have been endless on the smallholding for feeding animals, checking stock, fetching fuel up from our woods and for transporting tools, much, compost and crops in our large garden and going down to our village shop for our shopping,” she said.
“But most importantly it has been my lifeline to nature and wildlife, which are so important to me. I have dogs and have, for years, been going miles up into the surrounding hills and forestry where one day I saw a red squirrel, which was such an amazingly positive experience.”
