PLANS have been launched to set up an exhibition on a Tregaron-born minister’s son who went on to become a significant 19th century politician.

Henry Richard, who was born in the town in 1812, became a noted defender of Wales and the figurehead of the Peace Society for many years.

He served as MP for Merthyr and Aberdare for almost 20 years and such was his renown that he was called ‘The MP for Wales’ and ‘The Apostle for Peace’.

Now Nicholas Dykes, a historian and museum consultant, has set out to establish an exhibition to the man whose bronze statue stands on the town square in front of Y Talbot public house.

Mr Dykes’ proposed project has the solid backing of hotelier Mick Taylor, who owns the inn.

“Richard was a great man and it would seem appropriate to have an exhibition on him at the pub which overlooks his statue,” said Mr Dykes, who has set up a number of museums in Canada, including the Redpath Sugar Museum in Toronto.

His aim is to open the exhibition on 8 April next year – the 206th anniversary of Richard’s birth.

Anyone who feels they can help can contact Mr Dykes on 01531 634504.
