Plans to expand a Gwynedd bakery have been approved at the second time of asking after the original plans were turned down by council planning chiefs.

Last year, Gwynedd Council had received a planning application from the owners of Becws Islyn in Aberdaron (pictured), seeking to expand the bakery by adding a single-storey extension and decking to allow customers to sit and eat on the specially built terrace.

But planners denied permission to expand due to concerns over the potential impact on neighbours, fearing that the extension, including storage space and toilet facilities, would overlook a neighbouring garden.

However, planning officers have now approved amended plans, which received no letters of objection but one supporting a local business’s plan to expand.

The officer’s decision notice, which was made without the need to go in front of the authority’s planning committee, noted: “The alterations to the plan include a window instead of bi-fold doors on the south-west elevation of the café, the installation of planting boxes and a 1.6 metre-high fence on the boundary, creating a 2.5 metre-wide planting box on the front of the decking on the south-western side, and the removal of the stairs that went up to the decking on the north side.

“Having weighed up the amended proposal against the requirements of the relevant policies, it is not considered that the proposal in its amended form as shown on the plans on the application would be likely to have a substantial detrimental effect on the amenities of neighbouring properties.”
