MACHYNLLETH councillors have raised concerns over the “lack of progress” in finding new owners for a prominent derelict site in the town.
The former Travis Perkins site remains in “desperate need of tidying up”, town councillors said as owner Tesco searches for a buyer.
Last year the supermarket giant said it was “in discussions” to sell the site, which had been earmarked for a store in the town.
The company bought the former Travis Perkins site as part of its proposal to build a store in Machynlleth, but scrapped the plans in 2014 after a backlash from opponents and because an agreement couldn’t be struck over highways issues.
Since then the site has been up for sale, but was allowed to deteriorate in condition, leading Machynlleth town councillors to criticise its appearance claiming it is an eyesore.
Tesco groundworks teams have visited the site to keep it “as tidy as possible”, clearing away bin bags and rubbish, but councillors said the condition of the former site had still not improved.
Cllrs Michael Williams, Tony Jones, and Richie Gaskell visited the site last Saturday to check on its condition.
They said they were “concerned over the lack of progress in finding new owners for the site”, adding it was “becoming an eyesore”.
