PENPARCAU will not get an exciting new playground after the manufacturer revealed it was no longer in production, councillors have heard.

Despite being told Aberystwyth Town Council had been successful in its bid for £4,120 of grant funding from the Welsh Government, councillors were told by Cllr Jeff Smith, chair of the finance committee, that they would have to revise their original plans.

Councillors instead decided it was best to install a “disability swing” at Plascrug Avenue playground because there was no disabled access at the playground in Penparcau.

But Penparcau could, depending on a costing quote, still benefit from renovation works to the climbing frame, including new wood and platforms, and de-rusting and re-painting.

And there are also plans to install a new embankment slide at the much-maligned rope maze on North Road, which cost taxpayers over £6,000 and is rarely used.

The original plan was to remove the current climbing frame in Penparcau Park, which is 28 years old, and replace it with a new climbing frame using the grant money.

But the council were told that the most suitable climbing frame was no longer available, and Cllr Smith said an alternative was not feasible because it would require new surfacing works, making it too expensive.

Therefore it was agreed by councillors that a third option was the most suitable.
