A MACHYNLLETH group looking to create a new playground for the town has taken another step closer to its £100,000 fundraising target after Machynlleth mayor Tony Jones presented the group with a cheque.

Future Play Machynlleth is hoping to replace the current playground with a new purpose-built play area to encourage “risk-taking and imaginative play”, with their efforts already raising more than £17,000.

Danielle Armstrong, of Future Play, said the group had received strong backing from the local community and was hoping to be able to complete an upgrade on half of the play area as soon as they can.

Danielle said: “We are hoping to eventually raise enough to create a new playground that completely replaces the current one.

“To do this we are looking at raising around £100,000 in total. Currently we have a range of quotes from companies and are hoping to get at least half the area completed as soon as possible. Quotes for this range from £40,000 to £50,000.

“We have just over £17,000, with more coming in quickly. In the past six months we have seen a huge increase in support and there have been many groups and local businesses arranging fundraisers and contributing to the cause."
