IRATE councillors have blasted the county council for not improving the “dangerous” pedestrian access to a local hospital.

Pwllheli Town Council has criticised Gwynedd Council for not ensuring that people walking towards Bryn Beryl Hospital along the A499 are properly protected, when they are spending money on other projects, such as cyclepaths.

Gwynedd Council has suggested there are currently no funds to enact any safety scheme.

A spokesperson for Pwllheli Town Council said: “The facilities for pedestrians walking the first part of the A499 towards Bryn Beryl are nothing short of dangerous.

Pwllheli Town Council has on numerous occasions over a number of years pointed this out to Cyngor Gwynedd. It’s frustrating for the town council to see large amounts of money being spent on new cycleways - some largely unused by cyclists - while ignoring a dangerous stretch of the A499. Are they waiting for an accident to happen before rectifying the situation?”

A spokesperson for Gwynedd Council said: “As a council, we are supportive of the principle of introducing a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists along the A499 between Pwllheli and Ysbyty Bryn Beryl. However, as we have explained to Pwllheli Town Council, at present we have no funds to develop such proposals which would need significant funding to implement.”
