A DETERMINED Gwynedd councillor has urged as many local communities as possible to “work together” to save public toilets.
Cllr Linda Morgan, who represents Dolgellau, made an impassioned plea for everybody to “establish a partnership” and keep as many toilets in Dwyfor and Meirionnydd available as possible.
To do so, most local councils will have to spend a percentage of their precept, between £2,000-6,000, to part-fund their area’s public toilets or for more ‘community toilets’ to be established by private businesses.
Cllr Morgan said: “This is definitely the way forward to save all the toilets in Gwynedd.
“There are 74 council toilets and 35 community toilets at the moment, there are six on the waiting list for the Community Grant to help run toilets.
“I asked at a recent meeting if they would put a bid in again to have more finance to run more community toilets and the local authority agreed.
“In addition, I asked if they could approach the Trunk Road Agency to have them supporting more toilets with a contribution towards running costs.”
Cllr Morgan also queried whether more toilets could be charged as a means of safeguarding them for the future.
