CEREDIGION’s AM and MP will be campaigning to keep Britain in the European Union after the starting gun was fired on campaigning with the announcement of a fixed referendum vote date.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union is to be held on Thursday, 23 June.

The timing means campaigning will take place at the same time as for the Welsh Assembly - a vote set to take place a month earlier, in May.

Incumbent Ceredigion AM Elin Jones said: “I’ll be voting to stay in the European Union in June.

“Plaid Cymru supports continued membership, but recognises the urgent need to decentralise power within the EU.

“I firmly believe that the interests of Ceredigion are best served by UK and Welsh Ministers being around the table and influencing decisions, rather than isolating ourselves completely.”

Ceredigion MP Mark Williams said: “My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I will be campaigning to keep Britain in Europe.

“We receive hundreds of millions of pounds to help develop and improve some of our poorest areas; Welsh businesses are more easily able to sell their goods all over Europe, helping them to expand and take on more employees; and farmers receive EU payments which have helped many small family farms to continue during difficult recent times – something which has been especially important in Ceredigion.”
