CEREDIGION was one of only a handful of Welsh areas to vote to remain in the European Union on a dramatic night where the UK voted to leave.
With a turnout of over 74 per cent, Ceredigion - labelled the most europhile area in the UK in a recent YouGov survey - voted 54.6 per cent to 45.4 per cent to remain in the EU.
Ceredigion was the first Welsh authority to return a remain vote as Wales as a whole voted to leave the European Union in a night of shocks across the UK kick-started by a Sunderland count of over 60 per cent voting to Leave.
England and Wales both voted overall to leave, while Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain.
The overall result of 52 per cent voting to leave and 48 per cent voting to remain forced Prime Minister David Cameron to announce his resignation this morning. He will step down in October.
Ceredigion MP Mark Williams said he was “disappointed” with the result but that politicians “must respect” the decision and “make sure that in our negotiations the people of Wales do not lose out.”
In Powys the turnout was 77 per cent and the Leavers won with 53.7 per cent of the vote.
A total of 42,707 people voted to leave and 36,762 (46.3 per cent) voted to remain.
