THE clerk to Machynlleth Town Council has apologised after admitting he forgot to send a letter reminding Powys County Council of their commitment to hold a public consultation over a travellers’ site in the town.
The Cambrian News reported last week how the town council resolved to send a letter to Powys council reminding them of a commitment made by a county council officer when challenged by councillors following a presentation that a full consultation would be held.
However, the Cambrian News has now learned that Powys council did not receive the correspondence until the same day as an engagement event on Monday, 28 November, because of a clerical error.
Rab Jones, clerk to Machynlleth Town Council, and to Llanbrynmair and Glantwymyn councils, told the Cambrian News: “Since the last monthly meeting of the town council, I have checked my records which confirm that the letter had not in fact been sent to Powys County Council.
“This means the first time that Powys County Council officers had sight of the letter from Machynlleth Town Council was the copy hand delivered to Mark Davies at the engagement event in Machynlleth Bowling Club.
“I have since apologised to the town council for any confusion caused.”
But Cllr Gareth Jones said: “Merely apologising to 12 councillors is simply not good enough - the electorate also deserves to hear what had happened."
