CEREDIGION County Council raked in almost £3,500,000 on the sale of assets last year, the Cambrian News can reveal.

This included a historic Aberystwyth building which was sold for £100,000 less than the asking price, inspection of the council’s unaudited accounts for the 2016/17 financial year has shown.

Edleston House, the former county court and council offices building on Queens Road, was sold to Emyr Davies for the sum of £299,215 in the previous financial year.

But the property was initially listed on the property website Rightmove for £400,000, suggesting Ceredigion County Council drastically dropped its asking price in order to sell the property.

A council spokesperson said: “The council does not use Rightmove itself, it was used by an external agent initially used to market the property.

“The council took the site back when it wasn’t sold and marketed the property itself. The figure reflects the actual sale price.”

Mr Davies was given the go-ahead to develop the building into flats in November.

By far the council’s largest sale last year was the land for the Mill Street development in Aberystwyth, which was sold for £2.475m.

The land included the Mill Street Car Park and the 109-year-old Drill Hall, but it did not include Aberystwyth Day Centre, which the council says was sold in a previous financial year.
