GWYNEDD Council’s leader has branded members of the House of Commons as “disgusting” after they “belittled” the Welsh language.

Dyfrig Siencyn, who was made leader of Plaid Cymru in Gwynedd following last year’s election, made scathing remarks about central government at a meeting of Dolgellau Town Council, a town he represents on a local level.

Following laughter at speech involving the Welsh language, Cllr Siencyn said the Palace of Westminster should be allowed to fall down and be replaced by a park.

He spoke about Stuart Andrew MP, a “very likeable chap” who made his maiden speech in the House of Commons recently after joining the Parliamentary Welsh Affairs Committee.

Mr Andrew replaced Guto Bebb MP who had been transferred to the ministry of defence.

Mr Andrew, who represents Pudsey in West Yorkshire, is a Welsh-speaker originally from Llanfairpwll who attended Ysgol David Hughes, in Menai Bridge.

Following a short speech in front of parliament, the Angelsey-raised MP concluded his speech about Universal credit by thanking those present in Welsh.

He said: “Diolch yn fawr, Mr Llefarydd. Rwy’n ddiolchgar i’m cydweithwyr am y croeso cynnes.”

Responding to Mr Andrew’s concluding statement, MP Hugh Gaffney, who represents Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill in Scotland, said ‘Och aye the noo!’ drawing laughs from the chamber.

The reaction of the members caused Cllr Siencyn severe consternation as he judged them to have “laughed at” and “belittled” the Welsh language.

He said: “It just goes to show what a disgusting place Westminster is.

“It’s a shame they don’t let the whole building fall down and make it into a park.”

Recently both the House of Lords and House of Commons agreed to move out of the Palace of Westminster whilst refurbishments took place.

Costs are expected to exceed £3.5billion pounds.
