MACHYNLLETH Town Council has lost out on around £60 of income after someone propped open coin-operated doors at the town’s car park public toilets.
Councillors have hit out at the culprit saying that the town council needed the income from the toilet to be able to keep the facility open after it emerged that Powys County Council has withdrawn a £7,000 grant aimed at helping meet the cost of maintaining the toilets in the town.
The town council agreed to install coin-operated doors to be able to raise money to keep the toilets in the car park open, and acting clerk Izzy Lumley said the authority had received around £120 income so far.
But she had been disappointed to learn that another £60 had been lost after the toilet doors had been propped open to allow people to use the toilets without paying.
She warned councillors that, without that income, the town council would either have to subsidise the facilities or allow them to close, especially after the loss of the county council grant.
Cllr Michael Williams said: “People wedging the doors open is absolutely ridiculous.”
